Organizing a one day “National Webinar on Cultural Studies”, on 28 August, 2020
Introduction
Established in 1962, the Department of English is one of the oldest language departments at the University of Mumbai. Since its inception, the Department has been instrumental in pioneering relevant specializations such as American Literature, Comparative Literature, Gender Studies, Politics and Ideology in English Studies, and English Language Teaching.
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, the Department introduced the M.A. (English Studies) program in the academic year 2023-24. This program aligns with the NEP 2020 guidelines to offer a contemporary and inclusive curriculum. The Ph.D. program has also been recently updated to incorporate the latest trends in literary, linguistic, and interdisciplinary studies.
The Department boasts a well-equipped Library-cum-Media Centre with a collection of over 2,100 books. As a Research Centre, it provides access to dissertations and theses by successful research students for reference and study. Additionally, the Department features an ICT-enabled Seminar Room to facilitate interactive learning.

Eligibility for Admissions
- M.A. (English Studies): As per the rules of the University of Mumbai. An entrance test is conducted for students with a faculty/subject change.
- Ph.D. in English: Minimum 55% marks at the M.A. degree level (50% for Reserved Category) and qualifying PET conducted by the University of Mumbai or NET/SLET/SET.
- Certificate Course in Functional Proficiency in English: HSC or equivalent examination.
- Certificate Course in Professional Proficiency in English: HSC or equivalent examination and successful completion of the certificate course in Functional Proficiency in English/Interview.
