About
The Department of Sociology, University of Mumbai, has the distinction of being the oldest centre of teaching and research in Sociology and Cultural Anthropology in India. In addition, it is the oldest Department in the University of Mumbai. The Department was set up in 1919 with an eminent British sociologist and town planner Sir Patrick Geddes as the first Professor and Head. Over the last ten decades the department has made pioneering and significant contributions to teaching and research of Sociology in South Asia.
The Department has played a leading role in the promotion of social science research in general and in the development of sociology and cultural anthropology in particular in four major respects.
Firstly, it initiated an ambitious project of mapping out, independently, the vast and variegated ethnographic landscape of India through systematic field studies. In the span of over ten decades, more than 300 Ph.D. and M.Phil dissertations have been completed in the Department.
Secondly, it trained a fairly large number of talented students who were drawn from different parts of India and who, in turn, advanced the frontiers of sociological and anthropological research in India. Some of the leading figures in Indian Sociology and Anthropology had their initial training in the Department. Mention may be made of M.N. Srinivas, Irawati Karve, I.P. Desai, Y.B. Damle, Vilas Sangave, M.S.A. Rao, among several others.
Thirdly, the Department played a leading role in the professionalization of Sociology and Anthropology in India. The Indian Sociological Society and its Journal Sociological Bulletin owe their inception to the initiative of Professor Ghurye and his colleagues in the Department. Professor Ghurye served as the President and Professor K.M. Kapadia and Professor J.V. Ferreira served as secretaries of Indian Sociological Society from its inception in 1952 till 1966.
Fourthly, long before the value of inter-disciplinary research came to be widely acknowledged and emphasized, several inter-disciplinary studies relating to the varied dimensions of Indian society were taken up in the Department. The faculty of the department have made significant and path-breaking contributions to the leading paradigms of understanding Indian society such as the Indological and civilizational approaches, political economic approaches, approaches from the Dalit Bahujan Perspectives, and Feminist perspectives. Critical approaches from the vantage points of gender, environment, marginalization, urbanization, media and so on add cutting edge sociological depth to the teaching and learning practices in the department.

- The Minor Research Project awarded by Indian Council of Social Science Research [I.C.S.S.R., New Delhi] for a grant of Rs. Five Lacs, [March 2023-2024] is titled ‘Urban Environmental Transitions: Study of Suburban & Peri-Urban Areas of Mumbai’.
The rapidly expanding urban areas of Mumbai have transformed the everyday environments in the suburban as well as the peri-urban areas of Mumbai. This project attempts to map these transformations and examine the competing notions of ‘nature’ in both these regions. It attempts to show that knowledges of nature are invariably inflected with the biases of the knower/s and are socially constituted. It analyzes the impact of the transformations on the everyday life of the local communities. In doing this, it examines the relations between urban natures, culture and power as it shapes the natural world around them as well as their lives. The attempt is to examine how the material and symbolic dimensions of urban environments come to be imagined, appropriated and contested by competing groups as well as to understand the asymmetric power relations in existence across scales.
- The Major Research Project awarded by Indian Council of Social Science Research [I.C.S.S.R., New Delhi] for a grant of Rs. Eight Lacs [ June 2017- 2019] is titled ‘Development, Religion and Sustainable Environments: Collective Environmental Mobilization in the Western Ghats’.
The research aimed to understand the nature of the environmental movements in Uttara Kannada in contemporary times. Further it also tried to map the changing relations between communities, religious organisations, markets, the state and the bio-physical environment. The project highlighted that the environment of the Uttara Kannada district needs to be understood from within the category of agrarian environments, particularly its well known pepper, areca and spice garden economy. The dominant narrative of the district is that of the local communities being uniquely environmentally conscious and developing agricultural systems keeping the ecology and climate of the region in mind. Since the 1990s a number of large infrastructure development projects were started in this region, ostensibly for the development of the district that have in fact led to the destruction of the environment. However, the protests against these large-scale development projects of national importance, seem to be fragmented and muted. In this vacuum one observes the rise of the ‘green guruji’ of the local monastery that is trying to keep its herd of adherents together through its various programs. One also sees another shade of green that is of the environmental NGOs of the district that are working for the environment issues of the region. While at present, there is no current “movement” going on in Uttara Kannada, it however, does not mean that there are no people or collectives of people helping stay vigilant about the invasive nature of state-funded development. That vigilance is active, and all energy possible is being put into staying active. Declaring the region of which the district is a part, as a Biodiversity Hotspot by an international organization emphasizes the need to conserve the forests but this also does not take into account the work of the rural local people and communities who live there. The interests of the Global North, i.e., concerns of biodiversity, concerns of global warming have been addressed but the innate issues of the district, the status of agriculture, productivity, rural agrarian economy that is dwindling, needs to be discussed and addressed. On the whole what one can see on display are multiple shades of green between the local and the global and that are closely tied to the social and material lives of the local communities in the district.
Dr. Sonali Wakharde has completed a research project on “The Role of NGO Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal in Water Conservation Programme in Nanded District” under UGC-SAP-DRS-Phase-III in the academic year 2016-17. The sanctioned amount for project was Rs. 25,104/.
