Historical Background

Founding and Early Years:

  • Persian has a centuries old long history in this country. Persian was the official language and the language of elites when the University of Mumbai was established in the year 1857 A.D. Even before the University came up Persian was widely taught in all the then existing institutions.
  • Established in 1964, the University Department of Persian currently offers Part Time Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma as well as Full Time Masters and PhD Research Course in Persian.
  • Persian studies at University of Mumbai began in the early 1964s, reflecting the long-standing historical and cultural ties between India and Persia (Iran).
  • Initially, the focus was on classical Persian literature and historical texts, given the rich Persian influence on Indian culture, especially during the Mughal period.

Curriculum Development:

  • Over the years, the curriculum has evolved to include modern Persian literature, linguistics, and contemporary cultural studies. Since academic year 2023-2024 M.A. course syllabus is revised as per NEP guidelines.

Introduction:

University Department of Persian, was started with effect from 9th June, 1993, after dividing the then Department of Foreign Languages, which was in its turn, established in 1964. It is housed in the University of Mumbai’s, Justice Ranade Bhavan, B Wing, 2nd Floor, Vidyanagari Campus, Kalina, Santacruz (East), Mumbai – 400 098.

Persian has a centuries old long history in this country. Persian was still the official language and the language of the elites when the University of Mumbai was established in the year 1857 A.D. Even before the University came up, Persian was widely taught in all the then existing institutions. University teaching of Persian is almost as old as the University itself.

The separate and independent Department of Persian enjoys academic freedom and ample opportunities to grow and develop on its own independently. The Department offers following Part Time as well as Full Time Courses in Persian:

Students seeking admission to M.A. Degree Course should have completed their B.A. with Persian Language and Literature, as a main or subsidiary subject. However, under the Ordinance of 2237, graduates from the University of Mumbai or from the University recognized by the University of Mumbai in any faculty who have studied the Persian Language or having the prior knowledge of Persian language and literature may be recommended by the Department of Persian, for pursuing M.A. Degree Course of this University by clearing an entrance test conducted by the department with minimum 50% of marks.

60 years of Persian studies in University of Mumbai

University of Mumbai has had a significant role in promoting Persian studies over the past 60 years. Here’s an overview that touches upon the key aspects of the program, its evolution, and its contributions:

Historical Background

Founding and Early Years:

  • Persian has a centuries old long history in this country. Persian was the official language and the language of elites when the University of Mumbai was established in the year 1857 A.D. Even before the University came up Persian was widely taught in all the then existing institutions.
  • Established in 1964, the University Department of Persian currently offers Part Time Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma as well as Full Time Masters and PhD Research Course in Persian.
  • Persian studies at University of Mumbai began in the early 1964s, reflecting the long-standing historical and cultural ties between India and Persia (Iran).
  • Initially, the focus was on classical Persian literature and historical texts, given the rich Persian influence on Indian culture, especially during the Mughal period.

Academic Contributions

Curriculum Development:

  • Over the years, the curriculum has evolved to include modern Persian literature, linguistics, and contemporary cultural studies. Since academic year 2023-2024 M.A. course syllabus is revised as per NEP guidelines.
  • Courses often cover a wide range of topics, including Persian poetry, prose, historical texts, Sufism, Persian art and architecture, and modern Persian language skills etc.

Research and Publications:

  • The department has contributed significantly to research in Persian studies, with numerous theses and dissertations covering various aspects of Persian language, literature, and history.
  • Faculty members have published extensively in both national and international journals and magazines contributing to the global body of knowledge on Persian studies.

Cultural Exchange and Collaborations

Seminars and Conferences:

  • The University Department of Persian regularly organizes seminars, conferences, exhibitions, Persian film screening cultural and social programmes such as blood donation camp, workshops, talks and special lectures on Persian language, literature & culture, inviting scholars from around the world.
  • These events foster a deeper understanding of Persian culture and promote academic exchange between Indian and Iranian scholars

  • Many alumni hold influential positions in universities, research institutions, and cultural organizations, both in India and internationally.

Cultural Influence:

  • The program has played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Persian culture in India.
  • Alumni and faculty members often engage in public outreach and contributing to cultural festivals, literary events that highlight Persian heritage. Currently, Department of Persian in association with Iran culture House, Mumbai and Department of Music, Department of Civics & Politics, University of Mumbai has celebrated Jashan-e- Bahar on 25 April 2024 successfully. Wherein this Excellency, Cansul general, iran Consulate, Mumbai was actively participated.

Challenges and Future Directions

Future Prospects:

  • Department of Persian University of Mumbai aims to further strengthen its Persian studies program by enhancing international collaborations, updating curricula to include digital humanities approaches, and expanding research into contemporary Persian issues.
  • The department also plans to increase community engagement and public awareness about the significance of Persian studies in understanding India’s multicultural heritage.

In summary, Mumbai University’s Department of Persian has made substantial contributions over the past 60 years, fostering academic excellence, cultural understanding, and international collaboration. Its ongoing efforts continue to enhance the appreciation and study of Persian language and culture in India.

  • Activities by the Faculty of the department:
    Participated in a Two Days’ International Seminar (24-25 March 2014) held at Department of Persian, Barkatullah University, Bhopal, M.P. and presented a paper on the topic “Shibli Nomani as a Critic : in the light of his sher-ul-ajam”.Participated in a Two Day’ National Seminar (11 -12 October 2014) held by National Ameer Khusrau society, New Delhi and presented a paper on the topic “Delhi, in the vision of Khusrau”.

Participated in a Two Day’ International Seminar (10-11 Feb 2015) held at Department of Persian, Lucknaw University, Lucknaw, U.P. and presented a paper on the topic “Urfi : A Renowned Persian Poet of 16th century”.

Participated in a Three Day’ International Seminar (11 -13 March 2015) held at the Institute of Persian Research, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and presented a paper on the topic “Historical Important of Amir Khusrau’s Mashawis”.

    The University department of Persian was successfully hosted a two day National Seminar under the rubric, “Persian, Marathi & other Indian Languages: Linguistic and Literary Relations” on 23 & 24 February 2016 at I.C.S.S.R. Naik Bhavan, Kalina Campus, Santacruz, East, Mumbai-400098Screening of an Iranian movie “M for Mother” an official submission in the category of best foreign language film at the 2008 academy awards on 18th February 2015 at the auditorium of pherozeshah mehta bhavan, university of mumbai, mumbai.
  • Activities by the Faculty of the department:Faculty was participated in a Three Day International Seminar (2-4 March 2016) on the topic “ Spiritual Essence and Persian Poetry in Indian Sub-continent” organized by the Dept. of Persian, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, and presented a paper.Faculty was participated in a Three Day International Seminar (3-5 February 2016) on thetopic “Dimensions of Persian Language and literature available during Akbar’s Time” organized by the institute of Persian Research, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, and presented a paper.

Visited Central University, MANUU, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, A.P. for conducting Viva in Persian for PhD on 8 May 2017.

An article on the topic, “Universal Love and Harmony Reflected in Persian Poetry of Akbar’s Reign: A Brief Appraisal”, published in a book volume edited by the Institute of Persian Research, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in February 2017.

Attended one day International Seminar on Power of Education at Azamgarh, U.P. and presented a paper on “Role of Language and literature in the reconstruction of Society” on 14 May 2017.

Was participated in an Inter departmental Sports Meet “Sportico” organised by Physical Education Department, University of Mumbai on 15 & 16 March 2017 and won first Prize in Carrom- Singles.

  • Departmental Activities :

After five years interval, admission process for PhD in Persian restarted at the department. Three candidates submitted their outline of synopsis to Thesis section for pursuing PhD in Persian.
