Centre For Faculty Development in French (Centre de Formation FLE)

Centre For Faculty Development in French

(Centre de Formation FLE)

French is the first foreign language learnt and widely taught in India. Training of the teaching corps of French language in keeping with the latest research and modern techniques of language teaching is an important thrust area. While French is one of the most important foreign languages taught and learnt in India, it is also important to note that  teachers lack avenues for training in modern teaching techniques and many teachers are under qualified and lack training. Keeping this in mind, the Centre for Faculty Development in French or the Centre de Formation FLE was created at the University of Mumbai. The Centre  was inaugurated on 29th November, 2019 by the Honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Suhas Pednekar, and Dr. Bertrand de Hartingh, Counsellor for Education, Science and Culture & Country Director, French Institute in India, Mme Sonia Barbry, Consul General of France, Prof Rajesh Kharat, Dean, Faculty of Humanities. The Centre for Faculty Development in French (CFDF) is the first and only such independent Centre for Faculty Development in French in India supported by the Embassy of France in India. An MOU, largely delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was signed between the University of  Mumbai and the French Institute in India about the Centre for Faculty Development in French, in the presence of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai, Prof Suhas Pednekar and Mr. Emmanuel Lebrun-Damiens, Counsellor for Education, Science and Culture & Country Director, French Institute in India and a host of other dignitaries on 4th October 2021 at the historic Fort Campus of the University.

Amongst its many objectives, the Centre for Faculty Development in French aims to

  • Enhance professionalism of pre-service and in-service teachers of French in India with contextualised training modules.
  • Provide a platform with adequate resources to improve the teaching corps qualitatively.
  • Foster research interests in pedagogy of foreign languages.
  • Stimulate exchange of know-how with international partners.
  • Generate output in terms of teaching/learning resource creation and academic publications.

While the Centre works towards French language, much of the pedagogy of language learning is applicable to other foreign languages taught in India and Indian languages as well. Hence a strong bridge between languages and cultures, linked to teaching/learning techniques and contemporary language research trends serves as a broader framework for the Centre.

Dr. Vasumathi Badrinathan is I/C Director, Centre for Faculty Development in French. She is an Associate Professor in French and specialises in didactics of foreign language teaching and learning. With more than three decades of teaching experience, Dr. Badrinathan is also a pioneering resource person for faculty development of French teachers in India. She has been visiting professor in many foreign universities and has several international publications to her credit.
