About
The Department of Statistics, University of Mumbai was established in the year 1948. It was the first Department in the western region, for postgraduate studies and research in Statistics. The Department will complete 61 years of existence in this year. It offers postgraduate courses leading to the Master of Arts and Science (M.A./ M.Sc.) degree, by papers, awarded by the University of Mumbai. In addition to the master’s programme, M.Phil and Ph.D. degree programmes , post graduate diploma in actuarial science (PGDAS) and post graduate diploma in applied statistics with software (PGDASS) are also undertaken by the Department. Experienced faculty of the Department is devoted to research in their respective areas of specialization. Research and teaching are given equal importance by the faculty. Extra care is taken to pay individual attention to the students in their laboratory work and tutorial sessions. Project work and problem sessions are encouraged to develop innovative and analytical approach to statistics learning. The Department has a long cherished history of having produced eminent academicians and successful statisticians in the Industry. It is the only center of University of Mumbai for conducting M.A./ M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D., PGDAS and PGDASS programmes.

Alumni association of the Department of Statistics, University of Mumbai
Around 1970, the founder of the Department of Statistics Late Prof. M. C. Chakrabarti formed an alumni association to provide a platform for the alumni to undertake activities for the overall welfare of the Department of Statistics. After the untimely demise of Prof. M. C. Chakrabarti, the alumni association was led by Prof. Y. S. Sathe as it’s president. Currently the alumni association is in the able hands of Prof. R. G. Shenoy who serves as its president.
Prof. Y. S. Sathe retired in 1990 and he donated his entire felicitation prize money to the alumni association. This generous contribution by Prof. Y. S. Sathe, allowed the alumni association to constitute the “Prof. Y. S. Sathe Best student award”. This award is given each year to a student who excels in academic as well as co-curriculum activities. It comprises of a certificate and a cash prize.
As a part of the MSc Part 2 Semester 4 curriculum, students conduct a project that involves applying statistical methods on real life problems. These projects are presented in a one-day seminar at the end of the semester wherein all members of the alumni association are invited. In order to encourage the students, the alumni association gives out prizes to the top three presentations. To discuss the future activities of the alumni association, the annual meeting is held at the end of this one-day seminar. The alumni association annual meeting is preceded by a one hour entertainment program arranged by the current student of the department.
In March 2017, during the annual one-day seminar, the alumni association felicitated all the previous Heads of the Department of Statistics and also published their interviews in a book named “Sankhya Smruti”. Some alumni members also serve as visiting faculty for MSc and diploma courses.
The alumni association works tirelessly towards the overall welfare of the Department of Statistics. Its current managing committee is as follow:
President: Prof R. G. Shenoy
Secretary: Prof. (Mrs) S. P. Nabar
Treasurer: Dr. (Mrs) V. U. Dixit
Members: Prof. U. J. Dixit, Late Dr. S. G. Kelkar, Dr. M. R. Satam
Statistics plays a prominent role in collecting, analysing data and to draw reasonable and accurate inferences from collected information and to make sound decisions in the presence of uncertainty. In fact, wherever information is there, statistics is useful to extract the vital knowledge from it.
Statistics is constantly used by industrialists, academicians, researchers to generate or collect data, to identify important pattern or to extract features of data, to predict future needs or to forecast future observation, to understand the interaction between the different characteristics of data, to classify the current observation into different categories, to find optimum combination of different characteristics on which response is dependent. Mainly to answer the question “What data suggest?”
