About

Russian has been taught in the University of Mumbai (previously University of Bombay) since 1964 as one of the Foreign languages. As an important language of science, research, diplomacy and trade, Russian has enjoyed considerable popularity with different sections of the public in Mumbai.
Till 1993 Russian was one of the languages taught in the University Department of Foreign Languages.
In 1993 the Department of Foreign languages was divided into four independent departments: The Department of Arabic, The Department of French, The Department of German / Russian, The Department of Persian.
From 1993 till September-2003 Russian was one of the languages taught in the Department of German/Russian. Russian is a separate Department in the University of Mumbai with effect from mid 2003-2004.

M. A. in Russian consists of 8 papers : 1.4 papers in M. A. Part I
2.4 papers in M. A. Part II.
CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) Examination : 60 Marks External Paper and 40 Marks Internals totaling 100 Marks for all semesters.
Eligibility for Admission : 
(a) Graduation in Russian
(b) Graduation in any other subject and Advanced Diploma in Russian / Equivalent qualification in Russian.
Admission will be given through Entrance Test.
A candidate for being eligible for admission to the examination shall satisfy the following requirements, pertaining to attendance:
(1) Under ordinance 119 the following shall be the minimum attendance necessary for keeping terms:- Faculty of Arts First and Second Term. Three Fourth of the days on which lectures are delivered.

(2) He / She shall produce a certificate from the Head of the Department that his / her progress is satisfactory, that his / her conduct is good and that he / she has permission of the Head of the Department to appear for the examination.

Diploma in Russian

Programme Name : Diploma in Russian
Annual Examination will be held at the end of the academic year (March / April).
Annual Examination for the Diploma in Russian has two Written papers of 100 marks each. and a Viva-Voce Exam of 50 marks.
Paper I – Grammar & comprehension.
Paper II – Translation & Composition.
Viva-Voce Exam includes test on comprehension of unseen text/s and active ability to converse on topics pertaining to self and family, interests and hobbies. It also tests the ability to talk about ones country and traditions and festivals and the ability to converse on matters of general interest.
