About
Biotechnology, a multidisciplinary subject finds applications in varied fields from medicine to agriculture and from environment to sericulture. The term biotechnology was coined in the year 1919 by a Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky. The subject has revolutionized science since then.
Keeping a beat to the global demands for researchers in this field a full fledged post graduate degree course (MSc) in Biotechnology was introduced at the University of Mumbai in the year 1997. The department has also started a Ph.D. program in biotechnology since May 2012. Hence, currently the department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biotechnology.
The post graduate course initially started in three colleges across Mumbai is now offered at post graduate level in 18 colleges across Mumbai. The admissions though not centralized the course contents are uniform throughout the colleges under the umbrella of University of Mumbai. The course contents have been developed by senior faculties from various colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
The department was one of the first three to have started this course in the year 1997. Initially as a part of the department of life sciences, an administratively independent University department of biotechnology was established in the year 2006. Since its inception the department has witnessed a consistent rise in the students demand for the subject. The teachers are available to the students for academic as well as personal counseling, as & when required.
Vision
The department is entrusted to impart knowledge and envisages to equip its learners in applying their minds to develop technologies and processes, which will impact not only science but also society in the long run
Mission
- The department would strive to provide its learners an atmosphere that would nurture their talents and harness their potential enabling them to be competent individuals
- The department aims at creating awareness about potential applications in the field of Biotechnology with equal importance on the socio-ethical implications of the subject
- The department will foster the creativity in young minds to enable them tap their potential as emerging entrepreneurs in the field of Biotechnology.
- Last but not the least the department will strive to imbibe confidence in the learners so that they effectively contribute in nation building

Besides academics, one of the major focus area of the department is on research. The department has well equipped laboratories to carry out research activities. Moreover, a number of research facilities within the campus as well as out of the campus are made available to the students. It also has research collaborations and interactions with well known research laboratories in and around Mumbai.
The department has a young enthusiastic and student friendly staff. The faculty has consistently been successful in obtaining Major Research Fundings from various Government & Non-Government agencies over the years. The department encourages students to independently think as well as implement research ideas. The faulty also guides the students during their participation in a number of co-curricular as well as extra-curricular activities across various colleges, research institutes and Universities in the country.
Every year, the department also provides research guidance to project students from across the country. This includes short term to six months training / projects programs for post graduate students in Biological Sciences.
A fee of Rs. 2,000/- is charged for training/ projects.
The goal of the Department is to be a Centre of Excellence, in both academics and research with the help of young, enthusiastic teaching/ non- teaching staff and students.
