It was established in 1857 consequent upon “Wood’s Education Dispatch”, and it is one among the first three Universities in India. University Of Mumbai Law Academy (UMLA), is a constituent unit of the University of Mumbai, established in the year 2015. It is a world class institution, to provide excellent quality of legal education as well as looks after the overall development of students. UMLA is committed to produce exceptional lawyers and legal luminaries within the realms of knowledge. UMLA strives for academic excellence, yet maintaining high standards in all extra-curricular activities and develop student’s talents through exposure to moots, communication and soft skills, compulsory summer internships, debates, managerial entrepreneurship, etc. UMLA aims to encourage students to bring about social change through legal awareness and social activism. GOLD MEDAL

Every year GOLD MEDAL is being conferred to the student for securing the highest marks in the subject of Constitutional Law in the integrated B.B.A; LL.B.((Hons.) course run by the University of Mumbai Law Academy.  Gold Medal for 2020-21 was awarded, during the Convocation Ceremony of the University of Mumbai on 27th December 2021. The award was given at the auspicious hands of  His Excellency Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari Governor of Maharashtra, Prof.(Dr.) Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellor, and other dignitaries. Medal has been instituted and sponsored by Dr. Ashok Yende, Founder Director Of UMLA., in the fond memory in the memory of his late parents (Late Kamalabai & Ruprao Yende).

ATTENDANCE

  • Compulsory 75% attendance in lectures to appear for all exams.

Law School Uniform: Formal white shirt and black pants with black shoes. Blazers compulsory for moot courts and college events.

ADMISSION 

  • ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

A candidate passing the H.S.C. (10+2) examination conducted by the Maharashtra State Board Of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, with minimum 45% marks or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by the University of Mumbai with the minimum prescribed marks is eligible for admission to the First Year of Five Year Law Course. The above percentage of marks shall be relaxed by 5% for candidates belonging to the SC, ST and 3% for the OBC, categories recognized as such by the Government of Maharashtra.

  • ADMISSION PROCEDURE

The admissions to UMLA shall be based on merit in the Maharashtra State Common Law Entrance Test [MHCET-Law]. Admission process for the first year of the Five year B.B.A. LLB (Hons.) course will commence immediately after the declaration of MHCET-Law results. Reservation for 85% seats for candidate from the state of Maharashtra having the domicile certificate.  The Prospectus and the registration forms will be available at the UMLA college office. The Registration form can also be downloaded from the website. The Registration form along with the required documents, duly filled in, should be submitted to the college within the prescribed time. Thereafter, merit list of the selected candidates will be displayed on the notice board or declared on the UNLS website.

  • ADMISSION TO POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN CLINICAL LEGAL EDUCATION & ADVOCACY SKILLS

Any under graduate or graduate passing the examination conducted by the recognized board or University, with minimum 45% marks or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by the University of Mumbai with the minimum prescribed marks is eligible for admission to Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Legal Education & Advocacy Skills. 

  • ADMISSION TO CERTIFICATE COURSE IN CLINICAL LEGAL EDUCATION & ADVOCACY SKILLS

Any under graduate or graduate passing the examination conducted by the recognized board or University, with minimum 45% marks or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by the University of Mumbai, with the minimum prescribed marks is eligible for admission to Certificate Course in Clinical Legal Education & Advocacy Skills. 

  • RESERVATION

The matter of reservation for candidates falling within the categories of S.C., S.T., O.B.C., S.B.C., etc. is in accordance with the relevant Government Resolutions issued by the State of Maharashtra. 

  • DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION PROCESS 

– Original Copies of Marksheet, Passing Certificate and School & College Leaving Certificate

– Three recent passport size photographs.
–  In case of students migrating from other Universities, Provisional Eligibility Certificate from the Mumbai University must be submitted. Application for eligibility is to be made to the Registrar, Mumbai University in the prescribed form along with prescribed fees through college office.
– In case of students, from other colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University, who seeks admission, Transfer Certificate (T.C.) is required to be submitted. The applications for such T.C. should be sent through this college in the prescribed form.
–  Foreign students seeking admission should produce his/her passport and student visa at the time of admission. Tourist Visas or Entry Visas will not be considered as proper documents in this regard.
– At the time of admission, every student must undertake to attend a minimum 75% of the total number of lectures held in each semester. Failure to comply with the same shall result in such defaulting students getting debarred from the examination and taking necessary action.

The Placement Committee of the University of Mumbai Law Academy (UMLA) envisages an ideal forum to find relevant internship and placement opportunities for the students of the college. The main objectives of this committee is

  1. To Create and maintain a database of prospective employers.

Dr. Nisha was associated with Rehab Housing Private Limited (Legal Department) and worked in real estate activities with own or leased property. This included buying, selling, renting and operating self-owned or leased real estate such as apartment building and dwellings, non-residential buildings, developing and subdividing real estate into lots etc. The Company also dealt with development and sale of land and cemetery lots, operating of apartment hotels and residential mobile home sites.

She worked in SNDT WOMENS UNIVERSITY as an Assistant Professor (Visiting) in the LAW SCHOOL from 2010 – 2016. She was also involved in various seminars, conferences, book fairs, workshops and legal awareness camps which were organized by SNDT LAW SCHOOL and/or SNDT UNIVERSITY.

She is an active Trust Board Member in Ramchandra Laljee Trust which runs a Degree College for girls in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Kr. R.C. Mahila Degree College is affiliated to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra. It was established in 1981 by the Ram Chandra Lalji Trust, Bombay.  The college has become one of the prominent institutions of U.P. especially in the Agra region in a very short period. It provides new dimensions to Women Education in different faculties like Arts, Science, Home-Science, Education and Computer Science. The College is putting forward a new approach by providing guidance to the research scholars in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Sociology, Political Science, Music, Education and Home Science.

She was appointed as Ph.D. Thesis Evaluator at Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University and Om Parkash Jogender Singh University Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

The University of Mumbai has awarded Ph.D. (Law) degree to Dr. Keval Ukey in March 2017 on the topic “Human Rights Violation of Weaker Sections in India-International Law Perspective.

Qualified NET examination in the year 2011 conducted by UGC in the subject Criminology (Law).

Passed the Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Science and Related Law from the Government Institute of Forensic Science, Mumbai in 2020.

Completed LLM from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada, Aurangabad University in December 2007.

He also completed law degree LL.B. from Sitabai Arts & Law College, Akola, in the year 2003 and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Shri Shivaji College, Akola affiliated to Amravati University in the year 1999.

An experienced professional with over two decades of experience in Business Development and Sales in the fields of Biotechnology, Pharma, Education and IT, Prof. Uma Nehre has expertise in direct interaction with retail and institutional clients, their influencers and other stakeholders in these industries.

Her last stint with Campustrack allowed her to gain a reasonable understanding of the multifarious issues that plague the system, mainly the availability of orientation training programmes to get industry ready candidates. Her personal career graph as co-founder in various business set ups has provided her an insight which she would share during the course to groom youngsters to set up their own businesses and getting them ‘market ready’.

7th INTRA MOOT COURT COMPETITION

MOOT COURT SOCIETY

The Moot Court Society (MCS) of University of Mumbai Law Academy is responsible for conducting and facilitating all mooting-related activities at UMLA, as well as supporting the high standards of excellence that UMLA has carved for itself in the field of legal education. The MCS, thus, strives to give students a platform to develop their advocacy skills, while preparing them for internships and other allied experiences through events and workshops. The functioning of the Society is regulated by a written constitution that enables cross-functional development of not only the students enrolled in UMLA, but also members and office bearers of the MCS.

The aim of the MCS, as stated in the Preamble of its Constitution, is to promote the interest of law students by encouraging and supporting them as they improve, among other things, their legal knowledge, research skills, and advocacy abilities.

Our main responsibilities are:

➢ Planning, organizing, and executing the Annual Intra Moot Court Competition with the intent to equip first year law students to the realities of mooting and all that it entails.

➢ MCS also arranges “Demo Moots,” “Introductory Moot Workshops,” “Memorial Drafting Workshops” and “Court Etiquettes Workshops”, among others, and also appoints observers to assist first and second year participants in order to encourage them to participate in moots.

➢ Planning, organizing and fulfilling UMLA’s 1st National Moot Court Competition scheduled to be held in October 2022.

➢ Cultivating the mooting culture within the Institute and facilitating participation in national, regional and international moot court competitions, as well as allied competitions such as arbitration competitions, client counselling and mediation competitions, trial advocacy competitions, judgment writing, among others.

Intra Moot Court Competition

The Moot Court Society (MCS) organizes the Annual Intra Moot Court Competition with the aim to introduce the first-year students to the world of mooting and to give them first-hand court room experience. The Intra Moot Court Competition serves as the foundation for law students as it prepares them for various National and International Moot Court Competitions as well as other allied competitions. In order to facilitate optimum learning experiences, the Intra Moot rounds are judged by practicing advocates, academics, as well as sitting and retired Judges of various Courts and Tribunals.

In furtherance of its agenda of developing the mooting culture within UMLA, the MCS is proud to organize the upcoming 7th Intra Moot Court Competition, 2022 which is scheduled to be held on the 29th and 30th of July, and will acquaint the first-year students to provisions of the Constitution of India, the Indian Penal Code, as well as the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

The MCS has organised multiple workshops, such as the Memorial Drafting Workshop (on 04th July 2022), the Court Etiquettes Workshop (on 27th July 2022) and also a ‘Demo Moot’ which was conducted in April of 2022. Additionally, in order to prepare the participants optimally, mock rounds have been organized and will be conducted on 27th July 2022, enabling the participating teams to put their best arguments forward during the Intra Moot Court Competition.

Study Tour of UMLA Students to Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha

On March 24, 2023, the University of Mumbai Law Academy (UMLA) arranged a visit to the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha, Mumbai which gave students a rare opportunity to witness the functioning of the Legislative assembly and Legislative council of the state. The visit was organised with the aim of providing students with a first-hand experience and working of the legislative process and the functioning of the state government. The visit began with a briefing session by an official of the Legislative assembly, who explained the history and significance of the Vidhan Sabha, its role in the democratic process, and the procedures followed during the assembly sessions. The students were then taken to the public gallery of the assembly, where they witnessed the proceedings of the house, including the Question Hour, debates, and voting on various bills.

Later, the students were taken to the Legislative council, where they observed the proceedings of the house and got an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the members of the council.  The visit was a unique and enriching experience for the students, as it helped them to understand the workings of the government and the legislative process in a practical way. It was also a great opportunity for them to observe the functioning of the state machinery and understand the roles and responsibilities of the legislative branch of the government.

The University of Mumbai Law Academy would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Rajeshri Varhadi, I/C Director UMLA, and Prof. Ruzbeh Raja, Visiting Faculty, UMLA for their excellent coordination with the concerned authorities of the Government department for arranging this visit. Their tireless efforts and dedication in organizing this visit made it possible for the students to gain such valuable insights and knowledge.  We hope to continue such visits in the future to provide our students with practical learning experiences and professional legal education to enhance their knowledge

 

 Special Guest Lecture – Dr. Kavita Lalchandani 

On the auspicious occasion of the Guest lecture by Dr. Kavita Lalchandani, the student body of University of Mumbai Law Academy absorbed her knowledge and expertise on the topic of “Legal Framework for Interstate Succession in India“. The Bestowment of the knowledge by the Lecturer was met with positive reviews by the students. As important as the topic of the Guest lecture was, it is sure to benefit the students in the long term of their careers

 

 Workshop on Skill and Image Development

 Today’s event, i.e., Workshop on Skill and Image Development being organised by University of Mumbai Law Academy I/c Director Dr Rajeshri Varhadi and Co-ordinated by Dr. Nisha Kushwaha and Prof. Uma Nehare was a huge success. The Placement Committee along with other committees’ teamwork and efforts consolidated the success of the workshop.

The Special Guest Lecturer of the Workshop was Dr. Deepak Chhabra. His vast experience and knowledge were clearly portrayed by him through his insight on the topic of the Workshop. His replies to different interview questions fascinated the students of UMLA and garnered great respect and appreciation for him.

Dr. Deepak Chhabra gave out different points through a systematic PPT Presentation. Each one of his tips displayed his insight and knowledge accumulated by him throughout his life.

In the final bit of the workshop, Dr. Deepak Chhabra regulated the mock interviews of the final year students of the UMLA. He asked them wide variety of unique and challenging questions and corrected and even enhanced the answers provided by the students. The whole mock interview helped students get an even better idea of the challenges of an interview through critical and growth supporting opinions of the Special Guest Lecturer as well as the attendants of the Workshop.

 

 

Women’s Day Workshop based on Constitutional Perspective of Gender Equality & Self-Defence training

 Today on 18th March 2023, University of Mumbai Law Academy in collaboration with Maharashtra State Commission for Women organised a workshop on, “Gender Equality: Constitutional Perspective and Self Defence Training” for girls at UMLA, Shankar Rao Chavan Bhavan, Kalina campus, Vidya Nagari, Mumbai – 98.

On this occasion Hon’ble Mrs Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of Maharashtra State Commission for Women was the Chief Guest of the function.

Mrs. Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women addressed the gathering in her virtual address and emphasized the need of empowerment of women, boosting the confidence of Women in the country through the Constitution of India and Hon’ble Dr. Babasaheb R. Ambedkar’s role in the protection of rights of women.

Also Mrs. Chakankar has explained that we should create awareness about the rights of women and take care of the physical and mental health of women. At the end of a message Smt. Chakankar has given best wishes to UMLA students and other participants for their future career and studies. The students were very elated by the message.

 Annual Sports Meet, 2023

As it is always said that the favourite part of a game is the opportunity to play it. The Sports Committee of University of Mumbai Law Academy organized the Annual Sports Day of the college which was conducted on 16th-17th March, 2023. The Annual Sports Meet, 2023 was inaugurated by the Sports Committee Head Chinmay Chavan, thus, officially marking the start of the vigorous sports event.

The inauguration was followed by following sports: 100, 200 Metres Race, Relay, Carrom, Tug of War, Chess, Table Tennis, Box Cricket on the 1st day. On 2nd day, the sports such as Overarm Cricket, Badminton and Basketball were played ambitiously by the students of University of Mumbai Law Academy. The event was a huge success thanks to the efforts of UMLA students, faculty, and other official and non-official members. The event ended with a thunderous cheer by the students celebrating the victory of the winners.

1. On 9th March, 2021 Dr.Rajeshri Varhadi on behalf of University of Mumbai Law Academy in collaboration with Department of Law invited Hon’ble Dr. Laxmi Rao as an eminent guest speaker to celebrate International Women’s Day.

2. University of Mumbai’s Department of Law and University of Mumbai Law Academy (UMLA) jointly organized a 3- Days workshop with 6 speakers on ‘Clinical Legal Education and Legal Reforms’ from 28th to 30th of April, 2021. Clinical Education is an evolving ideology and is becoming increasingly prevalent within legal sector as it affords plentiful advantages to the students and assists them in gaining hands-on experience.

 

3. The University of Mumbai Law Academy (UMLA) organised a webinar on advocacy skills and the legal profession on 10th July 2021. The curiosity amongst the students was at its peak, considering that the speaker was Adv. Sharad Abhyankar, a Partner at Khaitan & Co., Mumbai. His impressive credentials, which all of us were quick to look up, added to our desire of wanting to sit through the session earnest.

 

 

 

4. This webinar was a part of Online Lecture Series webinar session conducted by University of Mumbai Law Academy. This webinar was conducted by Ms. Laxmi Soneji Kodnani on 20th August, 2021. The webinar consisted was on an Overview of Trademark in Indian Context.

IBA ICC Moot Court Competition 2023

We feel happy to inform you that University of Mumbai Law Academy was adjudged Runner Up at the India Qualifying Rounds of the IBA ICC Moot Court Competition 2023. UMLA was represented by a team consisting of Nathan Shinde, Vishnupriya Bhonsle, Nek Puri, Arya Gautam, and Arushi Keniya.  The intermediary rounds were judged by eminent legal practitioners from across India and the team of students of UMLA was finally adjudged as the Runner Up on 19 March 2033, after a rigorous 3-day competition.

The team was felicitated by former Chief Justice of India Shri U.U. Lalit, and will represent India at the World Rounds before the International Criminal Court at the Hague, Netherlands in June 2023. Hearty Congratulations to Nathan Shinde, Vishnupriya Bhonsle, Nek Puri, Arya Gautam, and Arushi Keniya for this achievement.

Pravitra Somani, for securing the highest marks in the subject of Constitutional Law in the integrated B.B.A; LL.B.((Hons.) by His Excellency Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari Governor of Maharashtra, in the presence of Shri Aditya Thackeray, Minister for Tourism, Environment & Protocol, Prof.(Dr.) Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. R.D. Kulkarni Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sudhir Puranik Registrar, and other dignitaries. Medal has been instituted and sponsored by Dr. Ashok Yende, Founder Director Of UMLA., in the fond memories in the memory of his late parents (Late Kamalabai & Ruprao Yende).
