The Department of Urdu was established in 1982 and is one of the Major languages Department of the University of Mumbai. Since its inception the Department has played an important role in establishing relevant specialization such as inter-disciplinary courses like Arabic ,Persian and Marathi etc. The academic curriculum of advance courses is supplemented by numerous seminars on comparative literature , inter-cultural hermeneutics, linguistics, translation ,philosophy and aesthetics etc.
Aims & Objectives
To motivate and prepare students for Post-Graduate Studies. To impart quality education at all levels of teaching i.e. language, literature, culture-studies and research. Our M.A. and M. Phil programmes are research oriented. A comprehensive syllabus, which we follow, has an inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural character which makes the students competent to pursue research in the field of inter-cultural studies which is a requirement in this era of globalization. Beside post-graduate studies in literature we offer part-time courses in language, which aim at teaching Urdu as a second language.

To generate interest in Urdu language & literature at higher levels of learning through the following activities :

  1. Conducting post-graduate teaching effectively.
  2. Supervising research at the levels of M. Phil. & Ph. D. Identifying new areas of research & Conducting independent research through various research projects.
  3. Organizing seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia, Mushaira & Musical Programmes.
  4. Publishing research monographs, bibliographies & scholarly books.
  5. Conducting visiting lectures for students by eminent Urdu scholars.

Facilities

The Department of Urdu is well-equipped with computers, printers ,scanner laptops, over head projector, internet and other facilities essential for generating interest in teaching and learning process. The Department has computers with InPage Urdu software and printer. The students are given opportunity to use InPage Urdu software and collect data regarding Urdu language and literature from Internet. The Department has also direct MTNL Telephone line.

The Department has established a fully A.C. Computer laboratory for Students from 2008.

Accommodation
There are Boys and Girls Hostels on the Campus. Two seats in each are reserved for the students of the Department.
Library
The Department has an independent Library with Reference collection of over 3,500 books on Literature , History, Biographical Works , Research Activities and other related subjects. It supports the information needs of the students and teachers besides the facilities available (More than7,500 Books) In Jawaharlal Nehru Library on the campus. The Students enrolled in the Department can avail the facilities of both for reading as well as borrowing facilities.

Post-Graduate

Programme Name: M. A. in Urdu Admission Process:
The candidate must be a graduate in Urdu language and literature. But in accordance with Ordinance 2237 of the University of Mumbai a candidate from other faculty can also join M.A. with Urdu provided he passes the Entrance Examination in Urdu. The examination is of Graduation level.

The teaching faculty of the Department undertakes research work in specialized as well as inter-disciplinary fields. It focuses on research work in Urdu language and literature. The teaching faculty Dr.Saheb Ali, Head of the Department has undertaken Major research project funded by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi .
