Department of French

 

Introduction

 The Department of French of the University of Mumbai, formerly part of the Department of Foreign Languages since 1964 became an independent Department in 1993. It offers a full-fledged academic programme from the Beginners course in French to doctoral studies. The academic curriculum is supported by talks and seminars on French and Francophone literature, linguistics, and translation. The Department also gains from enriching contributions made by visiting professors, research scholars from India and abroad. The academic courses and curriculum of French are constantly reviewed keeping in mind the needs of the students as well as the latest trends in French Studies.

Since 1994 the Department of French also offers Italian at Beginners and Intermediate levels. It is taught by an Italian visiting professor.

 

Location

The Department of French is on the ground floor in Ranade Bhavan located in the Vidyanagari Campus of the University of Mumbai. The Vidyanagari Campus is on the C.S.T. Road (now known as Vidyanagari Marg) near Kalina and is accessible both from Western Railway Santacruz (East) and Central  & Harber Railway Kurla (West). BEST bus routes 318, 306 (which come into the campus) & 313, plying between the two stations have a very good frequency. Other buses that have Vidyanagari on the route are 37, 312, 374 and 449.

FULL TIME COURSES:

1. FIVE YEARS INTEGRATED FRENCH STUDIES PROGRAMME

As part of the ongoing restructuring of academic courses to meet the challenges of globalisation and changing times, a Five Years Integrated French Studies Programme is being introduced from the Academic Year 2005-2006 in the University Department of French at Vidyanagari (Kalina Campus). It comprises a three years Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in French Studies with the possibility to continue for another two years to do Masters in French (M.A.).

 

BACHELOR OF ARTS (B.A.) IN FRENCH STUDIES

This innovative Bachelor of Arts in French Studies is a job oriented degree course. The special feature of this course is that five out of six papers are to be studied in French and the sixth paper is to be another foreign language at the beginners level. The choice of ONE Foreign Language (Italian, German, Russian, Arabic, or Spanish) will be compulsory at the FYBA and will have to be continued in the SYBA as well as the TYBA. At the TYBA two papers will be of the same foreign language chosen at the FYBA. Thus, students doing a Bachelor of Arts in French Studies will graduate with FRENCH as the MAJOR subject and the Foreign Language chosen by them which will be the SUBSIDIARY or MINOR subject. 

Duration:  three academic years.

 Eligibility: A student for being eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Arts in French Studies must have passed the HSC or any other equivalent examination.

Furthermore, the student must also have offered French as one of the subjects at the HSC or equivalent examination and secured a minimum of 50% marks in French. Reserved Category students will have to obtain a minimum of 45 % marks in French at this examination.

Students who have cleared the HSC or equivalent examination and done Diploma in French conducted by the University Department of French having secured a minimum of 50% marks at the Diploma in French Examination will also be eligible for the above-mentioned course. Reserved Category students will have to obtain a minimum of 45% marks at this examination.

Students who have cleared the HSC or equivalent examination and studied French elsewhere may appear for an entrance examination in order to qualify for the above mentioned course. They will have to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in the entrance test. Reserved Category students will have to obtain a minimum of 45% marks in this entrance test. This entrance test will be conducted by the University Department of French.

FEES: Rs. 1500/- per term.

VENUE: Department of French, University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Mumbai 98.

There has been good response for this course since the launching year 2005-2006 and the admissions to the FYBA will start from the next day of the HSC results of the Maharashtra Sate Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

Entrance Test for FYBA in French Studies : 1st June 2007 at 12 noon. Students are supposed to know the grammar and vocabulary of 12th standard textbook of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. Written paper of 1hour30mnts (grammar, comprehension, essay).

Students who have appeared for HSC with French as the second language are also advised to take this entrance test, though it is not compulsory for them.

MASTER OF ARTS (M.A.) IN FRENCH STUDIES

Duration: two academic years

Eligibility: B.A. in French of this or any Indian university

Or

Entrance Test to graduates in any subject with ---

Advanced Diploma in French of this or any Indian university

Or

Diploma in French Literature of Alliance Française.

Fees: Rs. 2226/- per term

Date of Entrance Test for MA in French : 12th June 2007

VENUE: Department of French, University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Mumbai 98.

 

2. Ph.D. IN FRENCH

Duration: four academic years

Eligibility: M.A. in French of this or any Indian university. For further details contact the Head.

 

B. PART-TIME COURSES:

 

1. CERTIFICATE COURSE IN FRENCH

Eligibility: Secondary School Certificate (SSC)

Duration: one academic year

Regular Batch –Morning (Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday : 8am - 10am)

Regular Batch Evening (Monday – Tuesday – Thursday : 5pm – 7pm)

Fees: Rs. 1040/- for every batch

Admissions open after the SSC Results.

 Admissions open on first come – first served basis. (Contact the office : room no. 15, Ranade Bhavan, Monday to Friday 11am – 3pm for admissions after the SSC Results)

 

2. DIPLOMA COURSE IN FRENCH

Eligibility: Certificate Course in French

Duration: one academic year

(Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.)

Date and time of Entrance Test for Diploma in French : 12th June 2007 at 12 noon.

Fees: Rs. 1040/- Admissions open from 13th June 2007.

Commencing on 12-07-2007.

 

3. ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN FRENCH

Eligibility: Diploma Course in French of this university

Or

Entrance Test after French studies till S.Y.B.A.

Or

Diploma in Language of Alliance Française

Duration: one academic year

(twice a week, two hours each, days to be fixed)

Date and time of Entrance Test for Advanced Diploma in French : 12th June 2007 at 12 noon.

Fees: Rs. 1040/- Admissions open from 13th June 2007.

Commencing on 03-07-2007

 

4. CERTIFICATE COURSE IN ITALIAN

Eligibility: Secondary School Certificate (SSC)

Duration: one academic year

Monday – Wednesday (3 pm – 5 pm)

5. DIPLOMA COURSE IN ITALIAN

Eligibility: Certificate Course in Italian

Duration: one academic year

Tuesday – Thursday ( 3 pm – 5 pm)

6. CERTIFICATE COURSE IN SPANISH

Eligibility: Secondary School Certificate (SSC)

Duration: one academic year

Tuesday - Thurday (8a.m.–10 a.m. OR 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. depending on the response)

The Government of France has announced a special award to these two faculty members for the services rendered to the French Language and Culture through their teaching. The award is a knighthood title called << Chevalier de l’ordre des Palmes académiques >> i.e. “Knighthood decoration for services in the field of Education”. This recognition of the dedication with which the two ladies have taught in over 35 years of their service comes at a point when they both formally retire. The University is proud to continue to have them as part of its Department in the role of Professor Adjunct.
